Bogyoke Aung San Market features one row of stalls where paintings are sold, most of which are copies of pieces by famous artists. A more rewarding experience is to visit art galleries around town where original artworks can be found. One local standout is the Myanmar Gallery of Contemporary Art in Thukawaddy Lane on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, whose collection includes the work of old masters and the country’s best modern artists. At Golden Valley Art Centre. commonly known as GV and located in an upscale residential area of Bahan Township, art collectors can find paintings that are more traditionally but no less skilfully executed. Another famous gallery is New Treasure. which is owned by Myanmar’s best known and best selling artist, Min Wae Aung, who is often busy with shows in other continents. The Nikko Hotel also has a good gallery on its premises. Other smaller galleries throughout the city are also worth a visit. River Gallery in an annex of the Strand Hotel has one of the best painting collections in Yangon. including work by some of Myanmar’s most famous contemporary and traditional artists.
