Indian and Chinese Quarters

West of Sule Pagoda Road downtown, you will find the bustling Indian and Chinese quarters with their own, particular flavours.

Yangon has a large Indian population, predominantly Muslim, but with some Hindus as well. Much of Yangon’s Indian population today is descended from migrant workers and soldiers brought in by the British after they occupied Myanmar in 1885. Many stayed on after the British left and have predominantly settled downtown. In the Indian quarter along Anawratha Street, all the way west to Shwedagon Pagoda Road, you will find Indian street vendors selling roti, chapatti and dosa (sometimes spelt toeshay) as well as colourful syrupy Indian sweets. A number of colourful Hindu temples are also located in this area of downtown, the most notable of which is the Sri Kali Temple on Anawratha Street. Several large mosques can also be seen in this area, including the Cholia Jama Mosque on Bo Sun Pat Road and the Narsapuri Mosque on Shwebontha Street.

Farther west, you will find the Chinese quarter, with shops selling all kinds of exotic goods during the day and lively bars, restaurants and clubs during the night. Particular standouts are the rooftop restaurants and bars above Theingyi Market, as well as the Kheng Hock Keong Chinese Temple on Strand Road.
